Canadian EECOM Excellence in Environmental Education Awards 2003
Nominate an Outstanding Environmental Educator in Your Community!
EECOM, the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and
Communication, is pleased to announce its second annual program of
awards for excellence in environmental education. Any individual or
organization, regardless of whether they are a member of EECOM, can
nominate an outstanding Canadian individual and/or Canadian institution
for an award. Nominations will be accepted in either English or French
and all nominations will be evaluated by those fluent in these
languages. Below you will find a description of the seven awards,
evaluation criteria and nomination procedures.
Help highlight environmental education, and support and celebrate
dedicated practitioners and organizations nation-wide send in your
nominations today!
Deadline for submissions: Wednesday April 30, 2003.
SEVEN AWARD CATEGORIES
Outstanding K-12 Teacher or School or School District:
Any teacher, school or school district that has gone above and beyond
the call of duty to foster an environmental ethic in the students; or
developed a unique project on an environmental theme, such as
conservation or recycling. Submissions with curriculum relevance and
involving some volunteer time by the students and/or teacher(s) will be
given special consideration.
Outstanding Post-Secondary Institution or Individual:
Any post-secondary educational institution, a sub-unit such as a
department or program, or an individual working for an institution, who
has demonstrated excellence in educating others in an environmental
ethic that achieves greater appreciation or understanding of the
ecosystem, or reduces the human use of energy or resources. The work may
involve a specific project or an on-going commitment to environmental
education.
Outstanding Private Company
This award is to recognize a business enterprise which has made a major
contribution to furthering environmental education and environmental
quality at the global, national, provincial, or local level. The
contribution could be made for advances within the work place such as
programs to educate workers and change the way work is done in order to
reduce pollution and/or waste. However, if a business enterprise is
being nominated for the latter, the company must have taken, or is
taking, measures needed to make its operation "environmentally
friendly."
Outstanding Governmental Agency (i.e. municipal, provincial, federal,
first nation, etc.) or Individual:
Any agency or individual that has significantly contributed to an
environmental education project, demonstrated an increase in public
awareness about the environment, and/or acted as a catalyst to foster
environmental education initiatives. Project scope could range from
in-house to national or international. The project should have concrete
results in terms of engagement of the target audience and/or
contributions to knowledge/research in EE.
Outstanding Non-Profit Organization
A non-profit organization or individual associated with such an
organization that has made a significant contribution to EE in one or
more of the following:
* Visible contributions in EE (such as research, innovations, curricula,
legislation, publications, etc.).
* Outstanding environmental action, contribution or stance.
* Excellence in reporting environmental issues for the purpose of public
education (print or electronic media)
Outstanding EE Membership Organization
This award may be offered annually to recognize the importance, vitality
and accomplishments of environmental education (EE) organizations across
Canada. EE membership organizations should meet one or more of the
following criteria:
* Consistent and on-going services to enhance EE, such as conferences,
newsletters, etc.,
* Completion and implementation of strategic long range plans for the
organization,
* Development of new initiatives that have enhanced the quality and
availability of local EE programs,
* Establishment of partnerships with other provincial / territorial or
regional organizations to promote and enhance EE capacity and/or program
delivery.
Outstanding Contribution to EECOM
This award may be offered annually to a person who over an extended
period of time, has made an outstanding contribution to EECOM by, for
example,
* Serving for several years on the Steering Committee.
* Serving on conference committees.
* Making significant contributions to COM'ERE/EECOM News.
* Conducting workshops on behalf of EECOM.
* Serving on international, national or regional committees on behalf of
EECOM.

AWARDS CRITERIA
Please be as concise as possible with your nomination descriptions,
ensuring that you highlight the individual or groups major achievements
while addressing the following criteria:
Description of EE Work and Specific Educational Need Served
Award applications should include a description of the individual or
organization's work, activity, project, or program being nominated,
including for example:
specific educational and environmental needs served
goals and objectives, - the audience and numbers benefiting
the scope of the initiative (i.e. global, national, provincial,
regional, and/or community level)
the major contributions made
the evaluation process used to improve the initiative and assess
impact
its long-term sustainability.
Encourages Stewardship and/or Mentorship
The submission must demonstrate that an individual, group or project
has increased public awareness of an environmental issue, acted as a
catalyst for positive change /action or, offered a role model that has
inspired a "movement" or provided leadership to others.
Replicability
If the accomplishments of the nominee are reproducible, they have the
advantage of being able to inspire and guide others to undertake similar
efforts in their own areas. Nevertheless, it is understood that not all
outstanding efforts in environmental education are reproducible. Hence,
the awards judges will take care to ensure that the evaluation of each
nominee's submission is based primarily on merit.
Years of service
If an individual or organization is nominated for work as an
environmental educator over time, the length of service will be a
consideration and should be noted.
Objectives/ Deliverables
If project-oriented, did it meet its objectives in terms of resources
generated (human, organizational, physical and/or materials inputs), the
reach of the project (its breadth and depth of influence) and its
expected results (outcomes and impacts)?
Names of Partners / Affiliations and their Contributions
Many innovative and beneficial partnerships are formed to foster larger
EE programs and to decrease a project's sole reliance on one source of
funding. Submissions should list all "in-kind", volunteer, and cash
contributions to the group/project by other agencies.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Letters of nomination should not exceed 5 pages in total length,
exclusive of any supplementary material.
Supplementary materials (e.g. CD-ROM's, videotapes, copies of
published materials) will be returned on request, but must be
accompanied by appropriate, stamped, self-addressed packaging.
Nominators are encouraged to include internet links where possible
rather than paper copies of material that is available on the web.
