Ecology Action Centre Advises the Nova Scotia Government on Climate Change

Halifax, Nova Scotia – In an effort to get the next Nova Scotia government
to take action on climate change, the Energy Issues Committee of the Ecology
Action Centre has released a set of recommendations for the government to
adopt. The committee has come up with five ways for Nova Scotia to meet and
exceed its share of Canada’s Kyoto Protocol commitments. They Kyoto
Protocol calls for Canada to lower its greenhouse gas emissions to 94% of
1990 levels by the year 2012 to fight climate change.

These recommendations include having 12% of Nova Scotia’s electricity come
from wind power, an additional 12% come from other renewable energy sources
like run of the river hydro, solar, biomass and landfill gas projects. The
Energy Issues Committee also wants the government to commit to an
accelerated phase-out of the provinces worst polluters, the Nova Scotia
Power coal-fired generating stations. All of these commitments can take
effect during the next government’s four-year term.

The other two recommendations are essentially legislative measures that can
occur right away. One calls for the province to adopt the two Model
National Energy Codes for Houses and for Buildings, while the other
recommends that the government provide a home energy efficiency upgrade
incentive as an alternative to the heating fuel rebates of recent years.
Both measures will increase the energy efficiency of new and existing
buildings in the province, and cut down on the carbon emissions that cause
climate change.
For a copy of the complete set of recommendations, go to the Ecology Action
Centre’s website at www.ecologyaction.ca.
