Workshop on Climate Change in HRM: What does it mean to us and how can we
respond?
Tuesday November 4, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Dalhousie University

Students from Dalhousie's School of Planning and the Nova Scotia College of
Art and Design are currently completing a Special Studio Project examining
climate change in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). The project will
assess what climate change means to us locally and how HRM can best respond
to it in the regional plan. The outcome from the project will be a Brief for
HRM's Regional Planning Committee outlining possible prevention and
mitigation strategies for climate change, including those related to policy
and physical planning. The tasks being completed by the students include:

-Understanding how international agreements like the Kyoto Protocol are
translated into policy and action at the local level.
-Examining the implications of climate change on the Maritime Region
-Examining best practices for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and
mitigating the impacts of climate change at the local level.
-Examining case studies (national and international) of the way other local
governments have responded to climate change.
-Conducting a short workshop with interested community members to assess
materials gathered and synthesize knowledge. This workshop will produce
suggestions for future development within HRM, make recommendations for
policy coordination between HRM and other levels of government and advance
scenarios of effects and possible responses to climate change for now and
the future.
