SOURIS, P.E.I. - A dispute over the herring fishery intensified today when=

14 protesters were arrested in Prince Edward Island after a nasty standoff=
=20
with police.
RCMP officers hauled away the Island protesters from the wharf in Souris=20
early today, leaving at least two with minor injuries.

Tensions rise at Souris wharf - Nov 4 2003
SOURIS  =97  Police marched on protesting fishermen to allow five trucks=20
loaded with herring to leave the Souris wharf late Tuesday morning. The=20
protestors had allowed the trucks on to the wharf earlier to unload five=20
herring seiners from New Brunswick. The inshore herring fishermen are=20
protesting against the seiner fleet, complaining they are depleting the=
 stocks.

herring fishermen agreed to allow trucks to return to New Brunswick without=

forced to close Thursday as several hundred P.E.I. fishermen protested over=

Wednesday, and once again fishing rights were at the heart of the dispute.=

More than 200 fishermen blockaded the wharf in Souris, stopping three New=20
Brunswick seiners from unloading their herring catch.
The seiners have now left, and are headed for Nova Scotia with the=20
remainder of their catch still in their holds. But trucks loaded with some=

of the herring from the vessels, are still trapped at the dock.=20
