Dear Friend of GPI Atlantic: Please accept our best wishes for a joyful
holiday season.

Your help and support over the years have contributed enormously to GPI
Atlantic's work to create new indicators of progress. As the year ends
and the Christmas season approaches, we'd like to ask you once again to
extend your generosity. Your tax-creditable donations will enable us to
continue research that has a direct bearing on the kind of society we
will leave to our children.

We don't usually think of research as an agent of change. But speaking
personally, I see our mission as a social revolution to ensure that the
real values we hold in common as Canadians make their way into public
debate. Indicators are powerful, and they help determine what makes it
onto the policy agendas of governments. We want to ensure that the value
of safe and strong communities, clean air, old growth forests, volunteer
work, health, education, and other key components of our collective
legacy, is not lost by measuring progress in narrow economic terms – by
how much the GDP rises or falls.

A contribution from you now will help to ensure that the right
indicators are in front of our policy makers and the general public.

GPI Atlantic started in 1997 to create a Genuine Progress Index for Nova
Scotia consisting of 22 economic, social, and environmental components,
as a pilot project for Canada. Since that time, we have produced over 50
research reports covering 15 of the components, with another four to be
released in the coming months. We've overcome challenges and skepticism
to apply the GPI approach in a practical and policy-relevant way at the
local, provincial and national levels, and to become an acknowledged
non-partisan authority in creating new measures of progress. We report
on this and related work on our web site (www.gpiatlantic.org), and in a
national publication: Reality Check: The Canadian Review of Wellbeing.
Contact us to receive this free in the mail.

GPI Atlantic couldn't have come as far as it has without your support
and generosity. As a non-profit with no core funding, we are completely
self-supporting. Our progress is strong, but it is also fragile. So
please join us in this quiet and sane social revolution by including GPI
Atlantic on your list of Christmas donations. Our charitable status
allows us to issue tax receipts for donations and membership fees –
which for most people means you'll get back 47% of your donations in the
form of a tax reduction. Greater tax benefits are also available for
donations of appreciated stock and bequests; please contact us if you'd
like more information on this. Please see the information below for
making donations online or by mail.

Please accept the best wishes of all of us at GPI Atlantic for a happy
and healthy 2004.

Ronald Colman, Ph.D,
Executive Director, GPI Atlantic
