FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cities & Environment Unit to Host Second Public Forum "Big Ideas 2"

Due to the tremendous public response to the first "Big Ideas" public forum
in early November, the Cities & Environment Unit is proud to host a second
public forum "Big Ideas 2". A larger venue and an exciting new panel of
notable local spokespeople will ensure a stimulating discussion. A summary
of the first event, as well as media coverage, is available at:
http://www.dal.ca/~ceunit/bigideas.html

The "Big Ideas" series provides a forum for discussion of bold possibilities
and aspirations for what this region should become. A variety of well-known
local figures will present their visions for what the HRM should aspire to.
Speakers include: Tooker Gomberg, environmental activist, writer, former
Edmonton City Councilor and runner up for Mayor of Toronto in 2000; Jennifer
Gillivan, Executive in charge of partnerships for the CBC; Paul Greenhalgh,
President of NSCAD University; and Frank Palermo, Director of the Cities &
Environment Unit.

"Big Ideas 2" will take place on Monday, December 8, 2003 starting at 8:00
pm, at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), Halifax Campus 1825 Bell
Road. Admission is free. The evening will take the format of a series of
panel presentations, followed by audience questions, propositions and
debate. This event is the second in a series of public discussions and
debates about the future planning and design in the HRM.

Based in the Faculty of Architecture and Planning at Dalhousie University,
the Cities & Environment Unit is a not-for-profit applied research and
community planning action group. Under the direction of Frank Palermo, the
Cities & Environment Unit team consists of five full time planners, graduate
students and administrative staff. Through local, regional and international
initiatives, the Unit pursues projects related to community development and
design.
