JUST IN TIME FOR HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING!
A GIFT THAT WON'T COST THE EARTH ... "ALTERNATIVES JOURNAL"
I CAN VOUCH FOR IT -- EXCELLENT PUBLICATION.
~Paul

Letter from Robert Gibson of Alternatives Magazine:

1Dec03

Friends and colleagues,

As most of you know, I've been involved with the editing of Alternatives for
a couple of decades - always in collaboration with a host of
under-recognized writers, reviewers, staff, co-editors and volunteers.
During most of that time, Alternatives has been in financial peril. It is a
common story in Canadian periodical publishing. Indeed virtually all of the
broadly environmental magazines in Canada (Sustainabile Times, Probe Post,
Encompass, etc.) have folded.

Today Alternatives is the only remaining Canadian environmental journal with
the mandate to link the work of activists, academics and professionals and
to cover both ecological and social justice issues. Alternatives too is now
facing a particularly serious crunch and is responding with a major
rejuvenation campaign. The Faculty of Environmental Studies at the
University of Waterloo, which has housed and helped Alternatives since 1984,
is facing yet more budget cutbacks and can no longer carry a journal with an
operating deficit. If Alternatives is to survive,
we must build a big enough base of subscribers and other financial support
to be self-sustaining.
We are confident that we can do this, but we need a little assistance.

Our major objective is 10,000 subscribers. To accomplish this we have
completed a lively redesign and will be going bi-monthly instead of just
quarterly in 2004. But we must also increase our national profile and reach
more readers. For this we need help from our friends.
If you think that it is important for Alternatives to continue to promote a
broad and informed sense of environment for all Canadians, there are three
ways you can help:

1. Subscribe: If you are not already a subscriber, send in a subscription,
and give gift subscriptions for Christmas. A one year subscription in Canada
is only $25.00, or $42 when one person orders two e.g. for gift giving (add
7% GST for each price listed). You can register for subscriptions on line
at:

2. Donate: Alternatives is a registered charity. Nearly half our operating
budget has consistently come from government sources, foundations, and
private donations. While we are currently working on a business plan that
will eventually place less reliance on donations, donations will still play
an important role during this transition year. We will be happy to send
you a charitable donation tax receipt.

3. Spread the Word: Forward this message to others who should be
supporting Alternatives. Forward your favourite Alternatives articles to
people who should be reading them - including your local newspaper editors
who should be re-printing Alternatives' stories (with proper credit). Our
Keep Alternatives Campaign team is also asking students, activists,
academics, organizations, and professionals, who feel strongly about
Alternatives and its role in Canadian environmental issues, to write letters
of support for the journal.

Letters can be addressed to the journal editor and emailed to
keepalternatives@hotmail.com.
Alternatives is looking forward to becoming Canada's self-sustained
environmental journal. If you would like to get updates on how Alternatives
is progressing towards its goal, you can ask to be added to the Keep
Alternatives web group by emailing us at keepalternatives@hotmail.com. We
will also post regular updates on the Alternatives website
<http://www.alternativesjournal.ca>

Many thanks,
Bob
