Job Descriptions

Job Title I - Forest Technician-Woodland & Trails Management Coordinator
Job Description:

This Coordinator position will work under the supervision and guidance of
Bay of Islands Centre Director and/or a designated supervisor for planning,
thinning, cleaning and managing of forested areas and trails. Directional
and interpretive signage. Oversees two to four workers and/or volunteers.

Must be cognizant of low-impact, ecoforestry and wilderness management
techniques, erosion and drainage patterns, natural environments and
habitats, preservation and conservation practices, biodiversity, etc. or is
willing to learn. Requires forestry and rustic building skills & equipment
and ability to meet with visitors from time to time in an educational
setting. Needs safety apparel, steel toed boots, hard hat, safety glasses.

Team management skills and First Aid training required. Handy w/carpentry
tools. Suitable for post-secondary student of forestry, ecoforestry,
ecotourism, biology, etc.

$7.00 per hour for a 40 hour work week. May 24 (14 weeks duration)

Job Title II
Forest Tech Assistant

Job Description: To assist Woodland and Trails Management Coordinator in
trails and woodland management projects and to work with occasional
volunteers. Must be strong and should have forestry experience, ability to
work with landscaping equipment and hand-logging tools. Ability to conduct
guided tours if necessary for visitors. Experience in forestry is preferred
and a second language is an asset. Suitable for secondary students. Requires
safety apparel, steel toed boots, hard hat, safety glasses.

$6.50 per hour, 30 hour work week. May 24 (14 weeks duration)

Job Title III - General Assistant
Job Description: Works closely with the Directors of the Centre and fills in
as necessary. Scheduled hours may include office duties such as phone
answering, mailouts, filing, data entry. Familiarity with MS Office,
Internet; may include Trail Stop duties such as greeting visitors, answering
questions, giving directions, sales of local products and may include
various other duties as determined by Centre Directors.

Must enjoy people, be flexible and work well under stress during busy
periods. A Second Language (French, German) is preferred but not essential.

$6.50 per hour. 30 hours per week starting June 6th. (12 week duration)
The Bay of Islands Centre is located on the Eastern Shore, approximately 1/2
way between Sheet Harbour and Sherbrooke. Room and board can be arranged.

The Bay of Islands Centre project is a 50  acre educational project on Nova
Scotia's Eastern Shore, established in 2001, incorporated May 25, 2003. The
non-profit association maintains an interpretive center at Highway 7 in
Moser River that focuses on sustainable rural living skills, environmental
issues and displays & demonstrations in low-impact forestry. Initiatives
under development include applied renewable energy, green building, and
other appropriate technologies.

Students will learn sustainable living skills and appropriate technology to
complement the region's defined future in ecotourism, low-impact forestry
and wind energy. Summer 2004 requires Student Employees that are cognizant
of environmental issues.
An opportunity exists for student employees to work on personal research
projects. Students are able to participate in workshops as offered and as
time allows.
