GROUP WANTS RVS BANNED FROM PEI PARKING LOTS

CAPE BRETON - Prince Edward Island's tourism industry is petitioning provincial and municipal governments to ban motor homes from staying in shopping mall parking lots.

Over the past couple of years RV drivers have made a habit of parking their vehicles in parking lots across North America as a way of avoiding campground fees.

Many RV drivers now regularly gather in Wal-Mart parking lots as part of an informal ritual.

But the Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I. hopes to put a stop to it, citing public health concerns and safety considerations.

Don Cudmore, a spokesperson for the association, said it has sent letters to the province and city officials in Summerside and Charlottetown urging them to ban the motor homes from the lots.

He said the RVs are better served by serviced camp sites and pose a health risk by dumping waste and waste water in parking lots where they stay.

Cudmore has also asked stores in P.E.I. to restrict motor homes from spending the night in their parking lots.
