creative thinking on transport and is inventor of the Walking School Bus,

TAMING SCHOOL AND NEIGHBOURHOOD TRAFFIC

This three-hour workshop is an introduction to new methods of calming school
and neighbourhood traffic. These new tools combine state-of-the-art social
programs with a totally new approach to design. David starts this workshop
by showing why traffic is first and foremost a community and social problem,
not an "infrastructure" problem. This new approach to calming traffic
requires a strong partnership between municipal officials and the wider
community. David has a reputation for being able to put complex concepts
into down-to-earth language. Participants therefore do not need a background
in engineering or planning. He uses an interactive style of presentation
that involves the audience in a journey of discovery.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

You should attend this workshop if you are: an elected official; employed in
municipal planning or community development; a transit provider or promoter;
part of a community organization that promotes walking, cycling and safer
streets; a health, recreation, safety or environment professional; a member
of a neighbourhood association; a member of a business and retail
association; employed in emergency services including police and fire;
employed in transport planning, street design and urban design; a parent or
school staff member interested in making your school grounds and
neighbourhood safer; interested in walkable and bikeable communities.

Hosted by the Ecology Action Centre's TRAX program and Active & Safe Routes
to School as one of a series of Car Free Day events in the HRM
(www.trax.ns.ca) with the following partnering organizations: the Nova
Scotia Office of Health Promotion, Sport and Recreation Division and the
Halifax Regional Municipality
