SABLE ISLAND: UNCERTAIN FUTURE?

An illustrated talk by Zoe Lucas on the natural history
of Sable Island, and the roles and future of the Sable
Island Station.

When: Monday, February 7th, 7:00-9:30 pm.
Where: Canadian Museum of Nature
240 McLeod St., Ottawa, Ontario (613-566-4700)
Admission: free

Since the mid-1990s, when Environment Canada, during its
Program Review, considered closing the Station on Sable
Island, the future of the Station and thus of the Island itself,
has been in question. This illustrated talk will review Sable
Island's natural values (terrain, flora and fauna), and the
Island's role as a platform for a wide range of research
and monitoring programs.

The presentation, followed by a question-&-answer session,
will highlight the essential function of the Sable Island
Station in providing infrastructure and expertise for all
activities on the Island, including stewardship and
research. Bill Freedman (Chair, Biology Department,
Dalhousie University) and Keith Betteridge (University
Professor Emeritus, University of Guelph) will participate
in the Q-&-A discussion. For additional information
about Sable Island see http://www.GreenHorseSociety.com

This event is sponsored by the Sable Island Green Horse
Society, the Ecology Action Centre, Nature Canada, the
Ottawa Field Naturalists, and the Canadian Museum of
Nature. Financial assistance provided by the EJLB
Foundation.
