GOVERNMENT CLOSE TO DESIGNATION OF GULLY LAKE AND EIGG MOUNTAIN

According to a recent story in the Halifax Herald an announcement on Gully
Lake and Eigg Mountain is only weeks away. This will designate these two
special places as protected areas.

The Minister for Environment and Labour does say they are going ahead with
protecting them, but that the boundaries will be finalized and announced in
the next month or so.

It's been 5 years since we first looked over maps and picked these two spots
and worked on a campaign to protect these areas-- now the final outcome
could
boil down to where the pressure is applied in these final hours. It's quite
likely that the Cabinet's (and really the Premier's) decision on whether or
not to capitulate to DNR and other pressures to shrink the Wilderness Areas
will hinge on what they hear from the public leading up to their
announcement.

We need to pull out whatever stops we can to get some phone
calls/letters/emails into the Premier's office. Contact info is below. All you need to say is that

(1) they want the Wilderness Areas designations for Gully Lake and Eigg
Mountain-James River to go ahead soon, and

(2) both areas should be at least as big (or bigger!) than already proposed
for the public review. [If needed, there's more info
at http://www.gov.ns.ca/enla/pareas/gullyEigg.htm]

Halifax office: 424-6600

toll-free number anywhere in NS: 1-800-267-1993 (the message on this one
promises to return people's calls if they wish).

N.S. close to setting wilderness boundaries

The boundaries for two new protected wilderness sites could be set before
spring, Environment Minister Kerry Morash said Thursday.

The minister had expected the boundaries for Gully Lake in Pictou and
Colchester counties and Eigg Mountain-James River in Antigonish and Pictou
counties to be ready in the fall, but the details aren't in place.

"I would hope within the next four to six weeks that we would be ready to
name these," Mr. Morash said Thursday. "We are going to do this. There's
just some additional work that we're looking at right now before they
designate it."

Mr. Morash said that includes talking to traditional users of the land about
the changes that come with designating a protected area.

These changes include banning activities like logging and only allowing
light recreation like hiking.

There's still the question of whether the province will have to compensate
Stora Enso Port Hawkesbury, which has a lease for a small piece of land at
Gully Lake.

Natural Resources Minister Richard Hurlburt said Thursday that he wouldn't
discuss his department's concerns with the area until talking to staff in
the Environment Department.

Mr. Morash, also the Queen's MLA, said he had an aerial tour of Gully Lake
and Eigg Mountain and was impressed.

"With Gully Lake, I was impressed with the large amount of hardwood where
back home on the South Shore we had mostly softwood, so it was gorgeous to
see the large hardwood stands.

"Also impressive to see there were large undisturbed areas of land and nice
to know that we're going to do something to protect those for future
generations.

Mr. Morash said he was also interested to see Eigg Mountain's rough terrain
and he could understand why there wasn't logging in areas.
