Climate Groups Across Canada Mark KYOTO in SNOW 

The Climate Action Network - Canada (CAN) will celebrate the coming into force of the Kyoto Protocol by spelling the word "KYOTO" with a human banner across Canada. Member groups will be expressing their joy at the completion of the first global step toward addressing global climate change.

"Winston Churchill once said: "This is not the end.  It is not even the beginning of the end.  But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning,"quoted John Bennett, Executive Director of CAN.  "This is what Kyoto is - the first step on a long road that we are very proud to be on," he said.   

"February 16 is a day for celebration.  We are welcoming the treaty into force with a nationwide human banner," said Stephanie Sodero, Coordinator of the Ecology Action Centre in Halifax, NS. 

"We have organized this national action to welcome of the Kyoto Protocol, and to show our confidence that Canada will benefit from achieving its greenhouse gas reduction target," said Ann Coxworth, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Environmental Society.  

ALBERTA...GIVE US A K!  The Alberta Toxics Watch Society and other organizations will get together to form the letter K.  Contact: Nashina Sharriff, (403)998-9983.

NOVA SCOTIA....GIVE US AN O!  The Ecology Action Centre in Halifax will move to Citadel Hill to complete the cross country spelling bee with the letter O. Time:  1:15 pm (Citadel Hill, west wide) Stephanie Sodero 902-429-0924

The Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in Kyoto Japan in 1997 five years after world governments promised to "stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system, " climate change at the Rio conference in Brazil. 

Canadian Organizations Cheer for Kyoto!

Environmental organizations are organizing events across Canada to mark the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol.  Activities and contacts are as follows:

Noon hour Celebration and Media Launch (Co-sponsored by the City of Whitehorse).    Food, music, speeches and displays.  Launch of City of Whitehorse One Tonne Community Challenge with speeches by MP Larry Bagnell, Grand Chief Ed Schultz, Mayor Ernie Bourassa, and a Yukon Territorial Government representative. Weeklong celebrations including display on climate change, energy efficiency and active living.

"Kyotoprotocolapalooza: Celebrating Kyoto's Entry into Force" 

Toxics Watch Society staffer Nashina Shariff will present "Tales from the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Buenos Aires," the story of her experiences on the frontlines of the international climate change negotiations.  She will also speak on what Kyoto's entry into force means to Canada and Canadians.  Nashina was a member of Canada's delegation to the recent COP 10 Climate Change Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

 " A Celebration of Kyoto Protocol"  The Toronto Environmental Alliance and  KAIROS (an inter-church organization with networks across the country), acting in solidarity with the global victims of climate change and local environmentalists, will celebrate the Kyoto Protocol coming into force and call for renewed and accelerated action on climate change from government and industry. There will be special appearances by our penguin and polar bear friends.

Location:       Front of Imperial Oil head offices at 111 St. Clair Ave. West, followed by a march to Ontario Ministry of Environment offices at St. Clair Avenue and Avenue Road.  (Meet at the Deer Park United Church, one block east of Avenue Rd. between 10 and 10:15 a.m.  Early birds get first dibs on the penguin and polar bear puppets.
