Conference Notice

Gearshift: A Call for Healthy Fisheries at Home and on the High Seas

Conference Dates: April 29th and 30th, 2005

Location: St. John's and Petty Harbour, Newfoundland

Join Canadian and International conservationists, fishermen, policy
analysts, and community leaders in addressing one of the most important issues
in the fishery - how we fish. For decades fishermen and the larger public have
called for reviews of fishing gears, believing that some methods such as
dragging or otter trawling are more damaging than others, and need to be
regulated accordingly. In recent years, many scientists have spoken out in
support of these concerns. In some regions of the planet, fishing groups have
implemented successful, healthy fisheries management practices.

Through a series of panels, open discussions, and keynote speakers, the
Gearshift Conference will bring together international experts in the fishing
industry and conservation community to discuss topics regarding creating and
maintaining healthy and thriving fisheries. Sessions will be held in two old
North-west Atlantic fishing communities - St. John's and Petty Harbour.

The results of the Gearshift Conference will be used evaluate the
performance of a Canadian Government organized event: Governance of High Seas
Fisheries and the United Nations Fisheries Agreement which runs from May 1 to
5, 2005 in St. John's. Organized by the Fisheries Recovery Action Committee
(Nfld), Ecology Action Centre (NS), and the Living Oceans Society (BC).
