The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is Nova Scotia's most
established non-profit community environmental
organization. Our activities include, but are not limited to,
transportation, marine, wilderness, urban issues, sustainable
food production, alternative energy, salt marsh restoration,
and coastal land protection and public access.
The Food Action Committee is seeking an outgoing,
organized and goal-oriented person to fill the position
of Urban Gardening Mentors Project Coordinator.
The Urban Gardening Mentors Project is funded by Social
Development Canada through the New Horizons for
Seniors Program. The proposal for the project was
developed in partnership with the Nova Scotia Centre on
Aging at Mount Saint Vincent University and received
support from three seniors serving organizations and three
youth serving organizations.
The purpose of the project is to develop mentoring
relationships between seniors with gardening knowledge
and younger people who want to learn food production
skills. The targeted geographic area for the project is the
east side of the Halifax peninsula, including the North End,
Downtown Halifax and the South End.
Gardening activities will be conducted within secure
locations such as institutional property and private
backyards. In addition to supporting the development of
mentoring relationships, the project will sponsor a series of
group learning events to familiarize participants with basic
principles of gardening, as well as celebrations to provide
a 'taste of success'.
An Advisory Committee composed of Food Action
Committee members, representatives from participating
organizations and interested seniors has been formed to
support the project.
The responsibilities of the Project Coordinator are to:
(1) Develop materials used to recruit project participants.
(2) Assess the abilities and interests senior participants
in relation to project participation.
(3) Identify the opportunities for connection with formal
youth programs and requirements to support the
participation of individual youth and non-senior adult
participants.
(4) Coordinate matching the seniors with younger people,
and monitor and support the mentoring relationships
throughout the project.
(5) Identify instructors (preferably seniors) for group
learning events; schedule and support the education events
and social activities.
(6) Assist in obtaining required materials (tools, seeds, soil,
transplants, etc.) through sharing, corporate donations and
use of project funds.
(7) Document the process and the outcomes of the project
in a kit format.
(8) Manage the project within a defined budget.
(9) Prepare required narrative reports for the New Horizons
Program.
(10) Attend and support Advisory Committee meetings.
Qualifications and skills required include:
* part or all of a university degree in humanities, education,
recreation, or other related area
* clear criminal record search
* demonstrated ability to work with people of a variety of
ages
* project coordination experience
* ability to work independently with minimal supervision
* strong communication skills; ability to write for a variety
of audiences
* planning and organization skills (manage priorities,
complete action plans)
* creativity and ability to take initiative
The position will begin as soon as possible and all project
activities will be concluded by the end of November, 2005.
The ability to work a flexible schedule, with the bulk of the
work during the start-up phase of the project (April - June),
is an asset. The average hours of work per week is 18
hours, if spread equally over a seven month period, at an
hourly rate of $12.50. The wage rate is negotiable up to
$14 per hour, contingent on experience, provided that the
work can be completed within budget limitations.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications are due March 30. Please send your resume
and a covering letter to cathy.crouse@msvu.ca
Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
