Through a partnership with the Atlantic Council for 
International Cooperation (ACIC), the Nova Scotia 
Environmental Network (NSEN) and el Comite Hondureno 
de Accion Por la Paz (COHAPAZ) would like to fill an 
internship position, which focuses on environmental 
research and education.

The Nova Scotia Environmental Network (NSEN) is a 
society of environment and health organizations dedicated 
to the conservation and enhancement of the environment. 
NSEN is a provincial affiliate of the Canadian 
Environmental Network (CEN). The purpose of the NSEN 
is to provide support for its members in their efforts to 
achieve their goals, by facilitating information exchange 
and by providing a medium for coordinated action plans.  
NSEN is based in Halifax.

COHAPAZ is an organization based in Tegucigalpa, 
Honduras, with affiliates in and around the capital city. 
Major activities include a Food Security project that 
focuses on capacity building among women through 
leadership and skills training, production and marketing of 
organic foods and other products to local markets, and the 
generation of strategies to build healthy communities. 

JOB TITLE: Environment Researcher and Special Events 
Coordinator
 
JOB DESCRIPTION:

Canadian component: 

The young professional will be involved with staff and 
steering committees of NSEN in engaging in research, 
resource materials and engaging local communities in 
participatory research through the following activities: 

- Conducting needs assessment of environmental and health 
issues, challenges and opportunities in Nova Scotia and 
how they pertain to the needs of COHAPAZ; 
- Coordination of NSEN Annual General Meeting 2005 and 
other special events; 
- Representing NSEN at steering committee, caucus and 
gathering meetings; 
- Participation in NSEN Environmental Education Caucus 
meetings
- Assist with the creation of the NSEN weekly electronic 
Newsletter, membership database and other administrative 
duties. 

Overseas component: 

- Assist at community clinic -- outreach, education 
activities around natural medicine, birthing initiatives etc. 
- Provide support for local small scale development 
activities (including community gardens); and 
- Meet periodically with regional coordinators at the clinics 
to facilitate capacity-building activities, including skills 
training, public education and community engagement

The ideal candidate will have: 
* Experience coordinating volunteers
* Undergraduate degree in international studies, or other 
related field 
* Fluency in Spanish
*  Experience in Special Events Planning
*  Experience in Project Management
*  Administrative skills including knowledge of Quick 
Books Accounting & Database software
*  Knowledge of Nova Scotia's Environmental Issues and 
organizations & previous ENGO experience
*  Understanding of social/political/economic reality of 
Honduras or Central America
*  Experience with forms of participatory education with 
adults, youth and children 
*  An Independent worker who can take initiative
*  Good functional Spanish 
*  Prior work/volunteer experience with grassroots 
community groups
*  Very adaptable, flexible, patient, and open to alternative 
ways of working and organizing
*  Self-driven, committed to positive change
*  Relatively good physical health and understanding of 
physical conditions for work (urban pollution, heat, 
sporadic schedules)
 
For all internships, CIDA requires that the candidate:
*  Be aged 30 or under; 
*  Be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant able to 
work in Canada; 
*  Be currently under or unemployed; 
*  Have not previously worked outside Canada in a paid, 
career-related position; 
*  Be a graduate of a college or university; and, 
*  Have not previously participated in another Internship 
Program funded by the Government of Canada's Youth 
Employment Strategy (YES).
 
SALARY AND BENEFITS 

Stipend: $250 per week. 

Other Benefits: 

* International travel to overseas posting;

* Job search skills; and, 
* Other potential training courses as opportunities. 

DURATION: 9 months -- Four months in Canada with the 
Nova Scotia Environmental Network and 5 months in 
Honduras with COHAPAZ. 

LOCATION: Halifax, Nova Scotia and Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
