                               .
Concerning an earlier post regarding the Halifax Westin's use of a Hummer as
marketing tool and the paradox that this creates because of an upcoming
workshop on environmentally responsible behaviour to be held there.

What is ironically pathetic (or pathetically inappropriate) is that this
vehicle may be leased and some or all of the lease payments and operating
expenses may be used as tax deductible expenses. Under the current tax code,
there is no distinction made between a company vehicle that causes a massive
environmental deficit and one that does not.

The pathetically inappropriate portion of this situation is the tax régime
that enables a vehicle such a this to be claimed as a tax deductible
business expense. A usage case might be made for a mine concern or a
forestry contractor, but using a Hummer to fill the wine order?

I do have some difficulty with characterizing this vehicle as a "war
mongering" vehicle. There are many CF personnel who would be very pleased to
do patrol duty in the "full version" of this vehicle rather than the usual
out of date, hand me down, or political trade-off kind of junk they usually
receive.

To wrap this up, if governments are serious about setting the right example
to reduce green house emissions and other pollutants from motor vehicles,
the tax code should be amended to reflect environmentally inappropriate
vehicles and vehicle usage. For example, lease expenses for a Smart car or
Prius hybrid might qualify for 150% deductions for an initial period to
encourage businesses to roll their fleets over.
