Not just a Northern issue!

Increased GHG emissions from Mackenzie Gas Project gas flowing into the
Alberta tar sands coudl single-handedly blow Canada's commitment to Kyoto.

We need support of sust-martians.

Feds and GNWT Urged to Come Clean

Yellowknife-The governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories should come clean about what the Mackenzie Gas Project (MGP) really means for the Northwest Territories and Canada say Sierra Club of Canada, Arctic Indigenous Youth Alliance and Ecology North.

"Premier Handley and federal ministers such as John Efford and Andy Scott should fess up to the fact that construction of the Mackenzie Gas Project probably means that Canada will not meet its Kyoto targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions" said Elizabeth May, Sierra Club of Canada's executive director. "Even Alberta Premier Ralph Klein admits that probably all Mackenzie gas will be needed for tar sands development-which produces the world's worst oil for the atmosphere. Northerners need to understand that the MGP would make the NWT part of the problem, not part of the solution."

"The MGP and induced developments, such as the Colville Hills gas fields and Alberta tar sands expansions must be GHG neutral" said Kevin Kennedy of Ecology North. "This means that for every tonne of carbon exported through the Mackenzie pipelines and generated by related exploration and development, a tonne of GHG emissions is eliminated or sequestered."

Jennifer Duncan, co-founder of Arctic Indigenous Youth Alliance, noted that both governments have a duty to consult with indigenous peoples on the Mackenzie Gas Project and the industrialization of the Mackenzie Valley that is likely to follow. "So far, the consultations have not been adequate. Neither has funding to indigenous communities been sufficient to prepare them for the dramatic social and ecological changes that would come with this $7 billion project."

The three organizations are urging northerners and other Canadians to sign the Mackenzie WILD Declaration, which envisages a future for the Mackenzie Valley in which biodiversity and ecological integrity are maintained; sustainable, healthy communities are developed, rights of Indigenous People are respected, and Canada keeps its commitments to protect the atmosphere under the Kyoto Protocol.

Elizabeth May is in Yellowknife on April 26 and 27 to launch Mackenzie WILD, Sierra Club of Canada's campaign against the Mackenzie Gas Project and to promote her most recent book "At the Cutting Edge". She is speaking at the Museum at 7:30 PM on Tuesday April 26 on the subject "Fuelling Climate Change: Mackenzie Valley to Athabasca"
