Dear Sust-Mar,

This is a notice and an invitation to action for non-profit
organizations and artists and those interested in community
enhancement, community gardens, green buildings, the arts, and a
holistic view of what makes community.

The Bloomfield Centre, in the North End of Halifax, has been deemed
surplus to HRM recreational needs (by city staff, not by actual users
of the centre). One of the major problems with the ongoing review of
the centre is that many of the groups and artists who call the centre
home fall outside the HRM defined mandate of the centre.

There is an incredible dirth of affordable non-profit space in the
city, yet these services are imperative community health. Some of the
current tenants of the centre include Street Feat, Elizabeth Fry
Society, Centre for Visibly Diverse Cultures, Canadian Mental Health
Association, the Bike Again Community Project, and many many more.
For over a year an active group of tenants and interested citizens
have been working to ensure that the centre remains in the public
domain, and that the centre be run by a separate organization (like
the Forum or the Centennial Pool) so that the centre can reach its
potential. The Ecology Action Centre is also looking for a home, and
the Bike Again Project is already housed in the centre.

One of the major objectives is to get city cooperation on the above
mentioned arrangement, but also on applying for federal funds to
retrofit much of the centre and create a model non-profit and
recreational centre that can be a showcase for sustainable energy use,
community gardens, non-profits working together to lower their
overhead - creating a vibrant, visible and accessible community centre
in the north end that continues to serve the community, be used by the
community and be built by the community.

So...this is a notice and call to any organization or individual who
is interested in contributing ideas, time, imagination and vision to
helping this become a reality. In addition, we do not want to reinvent
the wheel - anyone who has examples of what has been done elsewhere
along these lines - it would be great to hear your experiences, what
works and what doesn't.

Sincerely,

Susanna Fuller, on behalf of the Bloomfield Coalition.
