Feds must prosecute CN

Ottawa – Environment Canada must prosecute Canadian National (CN) under the
Fisheries Act and Canadian Environmental Protection Act immediately for
this week's spills of caustic soda and oil contaminating Alberta's Lake
Wabamun and B.C.'s Cheakamus River respectively, says Sierra Club of Canada.

"These spills have been catastrophic for fish populations and other aquatic
life not to mention local residents who depend on these waters" says
Stephen Hazell, SCC's conservation director. "Federal Environment Minister
Stéphane Dion must state clearly that CN – a federally regulated
corporation – will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Perhaps
then CN will not be so blasé about its responsibilities to clean up these
water bodies and prevent future spills."

The Sierra Club of Canada is also questioning what the federal government
is doing to ensure that CN is properly regulated to stop further spills
that endanger wildlife, watersheds and the health of Canadians.

"What is being done to ensure that federal regulations dealing with
railways adequately respond to these major spills caused by derailments?"
asks Katie Albright, SCC campaigner. "Two catastrophic spills in the same
week is a pretty strong indication that CN has lost sight of its
environmental responsibilities or worse is becoming a habitual offender,"
she argues.
