ORGANIZATION

The Ecology Action Centre, established in 1971, is 
Nova Scotia's largest and most active environmental 
organization. We work on sustainable transportation, 
marine and coastal issues, wilderness issues, urban issues, 
sustainable food production and alternative energy.

A program of the Transportation Issues Committee, Active 
& Safe Routes to School encourages active, non-motorized 
forms of transportation to school, such as walking and 
cycling. It is a national program of Go for Green 
coordinated in Nova Scotia by the Ecology Action Centre 
in partnership with the Physical Activity, Sport and 
Recreation Program Area of Nova Scotia Health 
Promotion.

The Making Tracks project will make Active & Safe 
Routes to School more effective and increase the use of 
active transportation among students in pilot schools. Using 
a community-based social marketing approach, it will 
conduct research into the barriers to the use of active 
transportation to school, an assessment of needs for the 
program to work in schools, redevelopment of the program 
and testing it in pilot schools across the province. The 
project is supported by the Government of Canada and 
Nova Scotia Health Promotion.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Recruit schools across NS for research and pilot phases
- Conduct barrier research and needs assessment in schools
- Develop community-based social marketing (CBSM) tools
- Adjust current program to reflect barrier research, needs 
assessment and CBSM
- Establish pilot school teams, meet regularly with them 
and provide ongoing support
- Assist teams with travel surveys, walkabouts, special 
events and safety education
- Conduct program evaluation, final reporting and 
recommendations
- Report to and work with the Active & Safe Routes to 
School Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS REQUIRED

- Ability to work effectively with students, school staff 
and parents
- Knowledge of environmental issues, especially active 
and sustainable transportation
- Engages in active and sustainable transportation on 
a regular basis
- Experience in environmental education: needs 
assessment, program design, implementation and 
evaluation
- Experience in conducting interviews, focus groups 
and surveys an asset
- Experience in marketing and creating promotional 
materials
- Strong public speaking and writing skills
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Project management experience and ability to work 
independently
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, internet and 
email
- Available to work some evenings and weekends and 
willing to travel within NS
- Holds a valid Nova Scotia driver's license
- Preference will be given to candidates with a degree 
and/or relevant experience in the fields of environmental 
studies, education, recreation or other related fields

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Full-time (35 hours per week) @ $18.00/hr for 18 months 
(Sept. 19, 2005 to Mar. 30, 2007)
