Nancy Jack Todd, author of A Safe and Sustainable World: The Promise of
Ecological Design will be on a book tour in the Maritimes the week of
September
20th. Nancy and her husband, John Todd, both Canadians, were founding
directors of two pioneering ecological ventures, the New Alchemy Institute
and Ocean Arks International. Spurred by looming environmental crises and
convinced of possible solutions, Nancy in her book outlines the work and
ideas and learning process that eventually led to the new academic
discipline known as ecological design. A chapter of the book is devoted to
the building of the Ark at Spry Point on Prince Edward
Island, a building designed to be a net producer rather than a net user of
energy.
Nancy was an early member of Voice of Women in Montreal and has always
insisted that commitment to peace and women’s rights be reflected in the
work and language of New Alchemy and OAI. She edits the journal Annals of
Earth, has lectured widely in the US and Europe and is the recipient, with
John Todd, of the Bioneers Award, The Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Award, the Daimler/Chrysler Award for design, the United Nations (FUNEP)
Award
and the Swiss Threshold Award for contributions to human knowledge.
A review in the Christian Science Monitor compares A Safe and Sustainable
World
to Rachel Carson’s The Sea Around Us. Architect Donald Watson calls it “A
clear, inspirational story that shows the nitty-gritty of how talent
coalesces around important how creative minds work together. This book is a
necessary read for any idealist who aspires to change the world through
architecture, design, the environment, and science.”
Nancy Jack Todd will give readings at Good Words Bookshop, Amherst on
Wednesday evening, September 21, at 114 Upper Prince Street, Charlottetown
on Thursday evening,
and will be a keynote speaker at Finding the Balance: the Environment in the
21st Century, a day-long forum being held by the Nova Scotia NDP on
Saturday, the 24th
at the North Branch Library, 2285 Gottingen St and the “Y”, 2269 Gottingen,
Halifax.
