Adobe has released a critical security update to its widely used Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat software to fix a problem where opening a PDF file could be used to take control of the computer. Version 9 of the Adobe Reader software is patched with version 9.2. These vulnerabilities are being actively exploited on the Internet now.

Windows XP, 2000 critical patch May 29

Microsoft has released a patch for a critical vulnerability affecting Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 enabling a website hosting a specially crafted malicious Quicktime video to take control of the computer. Windows Vista and Windows 7 beta are not affected by this issue. The Microsoft site features an automatic workaround fix which requires Internet Explorer and manual instructions are also available. This vulnerability is being actively exploited at this time according to Microsoft.

All versions of the Internet Explorer web browser are vulnerable. A user's computer can be taken over by simply opening a malicious web page using Internet Explorer.
