PRESIDENT'S REPORT

By John McKay

Halifax November 12th

It’s that time of year again and we would like to invite all members and spouses to the Christmas Dinner. It will be held at the Fairview branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on Main Street and Hillcrest Avenue December 2nd.

So please plan to attend. Rain or shine H1N1 or not. Lots of prizes and a free round of your favourite beverage. Bar opens at 11:00 am and dinner at noon If you intend to come please contact Louise Fredericks before November 24th. She can be reached at

(902) 454-4359

6539 ROSLYN RD B3L2N1

Non members are also welcome but must pay for the meal. See David Carr.

On other issues we would like to welcome the Cape Breton Chapter. It was formed in late May. Jack Ingram and I were in attendance. The president is Bill Doyle with Daphne Winans as secretary. Dick MacAuley is the treasurer.

In October there was a National Board meeting. We had a full discussion about the pension plan’s health. Our plan is still in the top 10 of defined benefit plans in Canada. As an ongoing plan there is still a surplus.

The law case is, at this moment, being wound up. Hopefully by early December the courts and lawyers will have concluded and crossed all the T’s and dotted all the ‘I’s. At that point we will finally have the formal surplus sharing agreement in place. All that has to happen then is a ….surplus!

Supplementary health was also discussed. The December cheque will reflect the increase that GWL/ABC will be charging in 2010. At this time it would appear the increase will be a little less than was agreed to at the Ottawa meeting. So please check your December pension statement for the exact amount.

We would like to remind you of the benefits that are available to our members EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) 1-800-838-2025

Also the CCSB (Consultative Committee on Staff Benefits) and the Special Assistance Fund..

If you have internet access these programmes can be found on both the Maritime site (http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Culture/CBCPensioners/) and the National site (http://www.cbcpensionersnationalassociation.ca/).

If you can we would love to see you at the monthly meetings at the Fairview Legion. They are held on the first Wednesday of the month at noon with lunch available for purchase.

At this time we would like to wish you a happy Christmas season and a healthy and prosperous 2010.

MONCTON THESE DAYS

Sixty-six members gathered for our Lobster Party at the Beauséjour Curling Club last June, making this, with our similarly attended Christmas dinners, two of most peoples’ favourite events. Good company and good cheer, catching up, reconnecting, having laughed over a draught, or wined and dined… you get the picture. Or pictures, which you can see on the Maritimes website: www.chebucto.ns.ca/culture/cbcpensioners
