Oct. 15, 2008 - Condolences to Norm Powroz whose father, John, 87, died on Oct. 3.

Welcome to Wilson King who has provided information for our Catching Up section. In honour of Wilson's appearance I've added Epsilon Hi-Y's picture to Then and Now. He and I were both Epsilon boys. Also found David Green at the Halifax law firm of Goldberg Thompson. You can read his bio here. I've sent him an e-mail but, so far, no reply.

Sept. 7, 2008 -Thanks to a tip from Dennis Garrison I was able to make contact with John Jenkins, a former classmate who is a doctor in Lunenburg. John was with us in grades 10 and 11 but moved to Ontario. His wife, Glenna (Landrigan), went to St. Pat's. He has contributed a photo for our Then and Now section. You can also read about the political ambitions of the next generation of Stuewes in our News and Views section.

Aug. 25, 2008 - Debbie Sanchagrin has proposed an informal get together on Friday, August 29 at Tugs Pub in the Waterfront Warehouse, Lower Water St., after 4:30 p.m. Please let her know if you plan on stopping by.

It's time to do a little catching up after slacking off this summer. In late June my wife and I took a walk through the Public Gardens to view the wide variety of dresses that were on display as students from various area high schools flocked to the Gardens for pre-prom pictures. Who should we run into but Kathryn Edgett and her daughter, Caitlan, a proud graduate of Halifax West. Also on the summer social scene was the July wedding of Caroline Wilson, daughter of Class of 71er Gwen Wilson (nee Quigley) and husband, Gary. Fortunately your intrepid editor had a photographer assigned to the event and she was able to capture the blushing bride and her proud parents in pre-ceremony preparation. Both of these social highlights are pictured in our News and Views section.

Also received a note from Tessa Hebb, who we used to know as Tessa Thorne. She writes: "It's great to see familiar faces!! I am living in Ottawa and have been for the last 20 years. I am the Director of the Carleton Centre for Community Innovation at Carleton University, but I have a strong NS connection as my oldest son Matt Hebb and family are in Halifax with two children, so I visit regularly. Please keep me on the mailing list for class info!"

July 19, 2008 - I've added a link to Dr. Hannon's obituary in our News and Views section. Thank you to Bryan Wood and Norm Powroz for sending in their thoughts.

June 19, 2008 - Thanks to Al Hutton, Ruth Legge and Norm Powroz who have all chipped in with names for our Hi-Y photos. Al has also sent us brief note for our Catching Up section and I've added him to Then and Now.

June 18, 2008 - In News and Views you can read about Bryan Wood's pursuit of the Hairy Haggis in Edinburgh The hairy haggis, of course, is a creature that inhabits Scottish hillsides and is adept at climbing because its front legs are longer than its hind ones. Also received a photo from Camber Muir and have posted it in Then and Now where I have also moved the Hi-Y photos of Lambda and Delta Chi. We're now searching for names for Voyethia and Delta Centuari (see Trackdown).

June 10, 2008 - Thank you to Norm Powroz who has provided his last 37 years in capsule form for our Catching Up section as well as a photo for Then and Now. Norm, who is one of several Ottawa-based 71ers, also advises that he'll be in town in a few weeks, from the 19th to the 25th of June, and would love to get together with anyone who feels like sharing lies over a few beers.

Class members and spouses pose at the end of our June 7 barbecue. (l-r) Judy MacLean, Ken Lee, Kathryn Edgett, Steve Smith, Jeannette Smith, Bryan Wood, Virginia Lee, Bill Shaw, Cathy Wood.

June 9, 2008 - To prepare for last Saturday's Class of 71 barbecue my son and I lugged our old pinball machine up from the basement and placed it on the deck to serve as an ice breaker. We shouldn't have bothered as there was no ice to break. Conversation among classmates flowed as easily as it did 37 years ago (easier, maybe).
Kathryn Edgett and Judy MacLean compare notes during the class barbecue on June 7

The numbers were low but the spirits were high and the weather was exceptional. Turning up were (in order of arrival) Bryan and Cathy Wood, Judy MacLean (Moulton), Bill Shaw and Kathryn Edgett, and Ken and Virginia Lee. DJ Ali Smith spun some old vinyl in the background. (She got a little carried away at one point and put on a Glenn Miller record. We're not that old, are we?)

We poured over yearbooks, gobbled some eats, and compared 37 years worth of notes. We got Kathryn to join our Then and Now section and Judy helped us fill in many names for our Lambda Hi-Y picture.

Later that evening I received a submission from Ruth Rumley, now Ruth Legge, that you can now read in our Then and Now section and in Catching Up. Welcome aboard, Ruth. Also received an e-mail from Joan Garson who asked me to pass on her best wishes to all. She said she'd try and find the time to catch us up on her past 37 years.

May 29, 2008 - Thanks to Jim Stanley who has come through in fine style with names for the many of the Delta Chi guys in our Trackdown section. On the other hand, Jim's wife, Linda, has been a major disappointment in providing names for Lambda. Can somebody help Linda out?

Welcome to Ellen Macnab (now Ellen Stewart) who has checked in from Calgary. You can see her profile in the Then and Now section and read her story in Catching up.

May14, 2008 - Even though we still have a few blank names I've moved Eta Chi and Alpha Hi-Y clubs into the Then and Now section and I'm asking for help on two new clubs in the Trackdown section. Please take a look. Bryan Wood has also provided an update of his activities in News and Views.

Apr. 2, 2008 - Thanks to Ted Migas, Cathy Campbell, Debbie Sanschagrin and Charles Nauss who have helped to identify some of the Hi-Y members in our Trackdown section. We still have many others to figure out though. Perhaps this will help. Here are the names of some of the club members who might be in these pictures. Please take another look. Maybe you can match a name to a face.

For Alpha: Mike Goldberg, Mike Purves, Rick Allen, Jon Dobbin, Bob Blunden, Doug Aikens, Glenn Rodger, Erik Nowers, Doug Earle, Greg Cutts, Mike MacAuley, John Hallett, Brian Martin, Barry Minshull, Brian Murray.

For Eta Chi: Pat Wallace, Wendy Maryatt, Margie Barrow, Fiona Imrie, Joan Cowan, Mona O'Hara, Sara Greenblatt, Bonnie Sutherland, Ruth Covert, Sandra Lowman, Jeannie Walsh, Nancy McGibbon.

I also added a link to photos taken at last year's Last Chance Reunion. See our Links section.

Ken Lee is our newsmaker of the week with a nice story in The Chronicle Herald. You can read the story in our News and Views section.

Mar. 21, 2008 - I've moved a couple more Hi-Y clubs into our Trackdown section. If you can help with names please let me know. Welcome to classmate Kathryn Edgett who writes to say she is "swamped with work and life (but) will send info into website when I get a minute!"

Our proposed get together for this weekend has died a slow death but we'll give it another shot, perhaps in May when (hopefully) the weather will be a bit nicer.

I'm happy to report that we did get some fan mail from Nateleen Zinck who wrote to say: "We have started our web site for the 50th reunion of Prince Andrew and hope to do a then and now section - hope you don't mind that we are piggy backing on your idea. It will look different but you were our inspiration - loved what you did." Thank you, Nateleen. Good luck with your reunion.

Feb. 23, 2008 - Thanks to Iona MacLean, Janet Servant and Allan Hutton who supplied names for Beta Sigma Phi. We're only missing a couple now. We have a few names that might be our missing persons: Cynthia Jones, Kathy Arsenault, Lynn Soward and Barb Yorke. Do they jog anybody's memory?

Feb. 20, 2008 - Susan Wenning supplied all the names for Omicron Hi-Y and I've moved the picture to the "Memory Lane" section of Then and Now. Ted Mussett's memory wasn't quite as sharp so we're still looking for a few of the Phi Rho Nu boys. I've substituted Beta Sigma Phi for Omicron in the Trackdown section and, once again, ask for your help in naming names.

Received a nice note from Jean Fillatre who promises to send more information when she has the time. She also forwarded our website information to Heather Black, Allan Hutton and Joanne Belanger (Ritcey).

Debbie Sanschagrin is still trying to see who is interested in an informal get together for Saturday evening, March 22 for dinner and a few laughs. Please let her know if you can make it.

Feb. 10, 2008 - Thanks for all the help in nailing down the names for Phi Kappa Pi Hi-Y and Omega Hi-Y. I've moved the pictures to the "Memory Lane" section of Then and Now. I've substituted two new pictures in our Hi-Y search in the Trackdown section and I hope we'll be just as successful. Sue Wenning and Ted Mussett we're counting on your help with these ones.

Debbie Sanschagrin is investigating an informal get together for Class of 71ers on Saturday evening, March 22 for dinner and a few laughs. Please contact her if you're available and interested.

Feb. 4, 2008 - Good response to our name search so far. Clary Ottman has helped out and Bill Tucker has provided several. He says he'll ask Andy Raymond for help on the others. Also heard from Laurie Dunbar who advised that Phil Bryden is the Dean of Law at the University of New Brunswick. I've sent Phil an e-mail.

Feb. 3, 2008 - "Bryan Wood goes Goofy" could be today's headline. No surprise to most of us. You can read all about it in the News and Views section. I've also decided to try and identify the people in the various Hi-Y pictures that we have on hand. You can help us by checking out the Trackdown section and chipping in with a name or two. Your help is appreciated.

Jan. 4, 2008 - Happy New Year! Welcome to Iona MacLean who has checked in with information for our Catching Up section. She promises a photo will follow. The indefatigable Bryan Wood has chipped in with a News and Views report. I've added a link to "Historic Halifax" for those of you who are nostalgically inclined.
