EVENING PROGRAM
Uschi Küng was introduced by Polly, and as we looked at the silk paintings in various forms which Uschi had spread around her, we knew we were looking at the results of years of experience.
Uschi has been living on the South Shore since 1999 and will be opening her gallery in Middle LaHave sometime in May. She has been painting on silk for about 20 years, and while she apologised for reading her remarks because her English was not that good, we certainly didn’t think so and found what she had to tell us fascinating. She uses various silks and brought many examples of her art, from paintings perhaps 4'x3' to a variety of silk cushions. The designs and colours were very beautiful and Uschi was able to answer all of our questions.
It was a most enjoyable program and we look forward to the opening of "Spirit of Art" gallery.

Betty was the Guild’s first Honorary Life Member and she will be greatly missed.
Quilter’s Poem
Love is a quilt - a quilt is love ...
Both love and a quilt should be:
Soft enough to comfort you,
Bright enough to cheer you,
Generous enough to enfold you,
Light enough to let you move freely,
Strong enough to withstand adversity,
Durable enough to last a lifetime,
And given gladly, from the heart.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Patchwork in Perspective
A six hour class with Lynne Edwards, U.K.
Saturday, May 31, 2003
Create a three-dimensional effect using true perspective.
In this class students will draft a simple patchwork block and then use a vanishing point to draw side blocks in perspective. The effect, seen in the two drawn above, is of the inside of a patchwork box. Easier to do than to explain! Once drafted; the design is transferred to freezer paper and pieced, using the freezer paper as a foundation and as templates.
Ideas are given for future use of the drafting technique to create original and exciting patterns based on other patchwork blocks.
SIGN-UP SHEET AT APRIL MEETING
Through the Window and Beyond
Lynne’s lecture at our closing dinner Monday, June 2, 2003
A talk with slides to show Lynne Edwards' personal development using Cathedral Window and the ways in which the different blocks can be combined to create original designs. The lecture will also be illustrated with several quilts and wall hangings which can be examined more closely at the end of the session.
Lynne Edwards Bio:
Lynne Edwards is an internationally known quiltmaker and a trained teacher. She began making quilts twenty-five years ago and has exhibited at the National Crafts Council Gallery, with the Suffolk Craft Society and in galleries and museums throughout the U.K. Her quilts have been exhibited at the European Quilt Expo in the Netherlands, in Germany and in Austria, and in 1993 she presented her own exhibition at the Houston Quilt Festival in the US. A Cathedral Window quilt was part of an exhibit at the National Quilt Festival in Japan in 1997. Lynne co-edited the Quilters' Review for the U.K. Quilters' Guild for thirteen years and writes regularly for magazines on patchwork and quilting.
She is the acknowledged authority on Cathedral Window and the variations of design and shape that allow the development of exciting and innovative quilts: her book "Through the Window and Beyond" is considered the definitive textbook on this technique and was sold worldwide before going out of print in 2001.
In 1992 Lynne was awarded the Jewel Pearce Patterson Scholarship for International Quilt Teachers. Lynne has taught at the Houston Quilt Festival as well as Brisbane, Europe, USA, and the National Quilt Show in South Africa and Quilt Canada 2000.
Her long association with the quilting movement both locally and nationally has involved Lynne in the organisation of Quilt Shows, from twelve Sampler Quilts in a local Village hall to the Quilters' Guild National Exhibitions. She has served on selection committees and is an experienced judge of National Quilt Shows. She was Senior Judge at the South African National Quilt Show.
In 2000 Lynne was given honorary lifetime membership of the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles and in 2002 was awarded the Amy Emms Memorial Trophy for services to quilting.

"Could you make me a single bed quilt featuring Tonka Toys," Brenda was asked. "Sure," she replied, knowing there were bed sheets available with the design. Being pretty sure she could incorporate the sheets into her quilt, she searched for and purchased same, one patterned, one plain, polycotton.
The toys were cut out and appliqued on to the plain sheet. Many hours later the quilt went in the bars and many more hours later, quilting was complete. That’s when the trouble started. The polycotton produced "more humps than a camel" said Brenda, "can’t present that to the purchaser!"
She took the quilt apart and began her applique once again, this time using plain cotton blocks as a background for the Tonka patterns. Sitting quietly with her grandson, blocks at her side, stitching and drinking a mug of coffee, the second catastrophe happened - you guessed it - coffee upset all over the pile of blocks! Laundry done, stains removed, she continued with the applique, was satisfied with the result and restitched the quilt top, machine-quilting the final offering. "Very nice," said her son, "but you’ve left some of the original sheet fabric in between that Tonka front end loader". With remarkable calm, Brenda set about carefully cutting out the offending fabric to reveal the plain background. Finally satisfied, we saw the finished quilt at Sew & Tell on Monday evening - quite a story and I understand the recipient appreciates the end result!
