[NOTE Hulwort 1]

In his List of Medicamenta, (Vol.II, xlviii-xlvix), which is a
'List of remedies used and the drugs, herbs and other ingredients of
prescriptions', provided to augment the Celsus de medicina text, Spencer
writes:

Polium; Teucrium polium, polygermander, the grey
      evergreen germander, hulwort.
The popular name for this was trixago, because
its leaves resembled the castor oil plant, trixis.
A decoction of the leaves was used for the
relief of pain in the side and cough. I. 406; III. 532,
and also for snake bite, II. 120.

Laura Re hulwort', my 1979 edition of the Oxford English Dictionary has the following entry for this [my translations and comments in brackets; shame e-mail won't carry italics so have marked italicised words +'!]: "+Herb. +Obs. [with herbalists, obsolete]. The name of a plant. [!]. c.1265 +Voc. +Names +Pl. in Wr.-Wuelcker 55/I [I think this is an old list of plant names] +Pulegium, puliol, hulwurt. 1597 Gerarde. +Herbal. App. [Appendix?] Hulwort is +Polium. 1884. Miller +Plant-n, +Teucrium +Polium, Cat-Thyme, Hul-wort, Poly Germander." I can fish out the three literary references - but later, if you need them; they are in minute print in the second volume, and I haven't the energy to do it tonight! Hope this helps...
