Activities:
Members of the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club have developed the largest and most active walking club in Atlantic Canada. Every week throughout the year we get together for a guided recreational walk on one of many beautiful and varied trails - along the coast and rivers, on woodland and pioneer trails, etc. Our walks are usually 10 km in length but sometimes longer. All walks are open to the general public and begin at a set time and location as indicated in our Schedule of Guided Walks. There is no need to pre-register and the walks take place in all weather conditions. Our walks, also called volksmarches, are friendly, non-competitive and upon completion everyone feels like a winner.
Volksmarches were introduced to Canada by the Dartmouth club on a permanent basis in 1983. A volksmarch is an organized community walk, held in all weather conditions, along a pre-selected route. In addition to our weekly guided walks, we also offer two other styles of walks. Once per year, we hold an International Event where trails are marked with signs and tape as well as written directions. You may start your walk at any time between 8 am and 11 am and the trails close at 4 pm. We also have several permanent trails set up which are called Year Round Events. The Year Round Events are always available during daylight hours - simply register at the start point, receive written directions including a trail map, and one may complete the event whenever you wish.
Volkssports began in the 1960's in Bavaria, when Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria founded the Internationaler Volkssportverband, commonly called the IVV. Membership has now been extended to many countries and is still growing. The Canadian Volkssport Federation was formed in 1986 and Canada officially joined the IVV in 1987. There are now over 60 Canadian clubs.
Volkssports are open to everyone and all age groups. Since walking is a relatively simple activity, it is a safe and inexpensive form of exercise with health benefits accruing for years. Although membership in a volkssport club is not a requirement, most walkers choose to do so and enjoy the regular participation in the friendly company of other members. Anyone may participate in a volkssport event free of charge; however, before starting an event, all walkers must register. Our free Schedule of Guided Walks is available at the Trail Shop, Quinpool Rd., Halifax and the Findlay Community Center, Elliot St., Dartmouth.
