THE HUNT PAMPHLET

  • This pamphlet follows a descendent line of Thomas Blanchard who came to America in 1639.
  • It is by Jonathan Hunt, documented abt. 1898, published thereafter, the cover bearing the title "The BLANCHARD FAMILY" with a picture below, possibily that of the author. The first page is titled:
    " HISTORY of the BLANCHARD FAMILY"
    "From 1636 to the present time."
    "By Jonathan Hunt Reedtown, Ohio."
    "Price 25 cents."

  • This pamphlet is edited in two columns per page. Two copies of the pamphlet were donated to the New England Historic Genealogical Society by Mrs George A. Wallace, of Buffalo, New York, on Nov 30, 1915 as shown at the back of the pamphlet and on the cover.

     THE BLANCHARD FAMILY  -- by Jonathan HUNT
         Among the thousands of Huguenots, (French protestants) who fled from
    France to save their lives were the BLACHARDs(?). It was originally
    spelled BLANCHET, a French word meaning white. But the English take great
    liberty with all names; more especially if they can be more easily
    pronounced. The name was changed to BLANCHARD.
         THOMAS BLANCHARD is the first name that we have with certainty. His
    son, Nathaniel BLANCHARD, was born in England in 1636 and with his father,
    emigrated to New England in 1639; married in Charleston, Mass., SUSANNAH
    BATES, daughter of Deacon EDWARD BATES of Weymouth, Mass., Dec. 16,
    1658(?). Settled there where his children were born and where he died
    August 27, 1676. His widow married Deacon THOMAS BASS of Braintree, as his
    second wife.

         SAMUEL BLANCHARD married MARY WHITMARSH Jan. 4, 1744, and settled at
    Braintree. Children of the sixth generation were:

         ELISHA, born Aug. 17, 1752.
         MARY died in infancy.

         MARY 2d, born 1760.
         The last married ELISHA HOWARD of Bridgewater, Mass.
       NOTE: The above family moved from Braintree to East Stoughton, Mass.,
    about 1754, and settled near what is now called the New Cemetery, located
    on East Main street. There is no record of their deaths. LEMUEL was in the
    battle of Bemington. 
         LEMUEL married MARY LITTLEFIELD, whose parents came
    from Ireland,(she lived in East Stoughton.) Date of marriage, May 29,
    1773. He moved to Guildford, Vt., and engaged in farming; thence to
    Reedsborough in 1795, where he died in 1811. His wife died two years
    later.

    born in Lebanon, Wingham county, Conn., Jan 29, 1782. She died in Huron
    county, O., Dec. 23, 1834. Their children, of the eighth generation, were:

  • Rannie, I note that Hunt has Lem's wife, Mary Littlefield as having parents who came from Ireland. There is a lot more accurate information on her descent available, and I doubt not that you are aware of this. They are an old New England family, and English rather than Irish. -- Bill B.
