" Oh, I didn't know that was from a musical "
So, I played songs that make you say, "hey, I didn't know that was from a musical", or maybe you knew they were from musicals, but you didn't know which musical or who first performed it. All of the songs I played were performed by the original performers of the songs, which I think gives a kind of innocence and purity to songs like " If my friends could see me now ", which is performed all over the place nowadays.
Oh, but first, I talked about the recent London video production of Jesus Christ Superstar, featuring Jerome Praden as Judas, and so I played:
" The crucifixion/ John 19:41 " from the soundtrack of Jesus Christ Superstar
" Sweet victory divine " performed by Jerome Praden from Napoleon
And then, the "didn't know they were from musicals" songs:
" A bushel and a peck " performed by Vivian Blaine from Guys and Dolls
" If my friends could see me now " performed by Gwen Verdon from Sweet Charity
" Hernando's hideaway " performed by Carol Haney from the soundtrack of The Pajame Game
" Put on a happy face " performed by Dick Van Dyke from Bye Bye Birdie
" I'll never fall in love again " performed by Jill O'Hara and Jerry Orbach from Promises, Promises
" Razzle dazzle " performed by Jerry Orbach from Chicago
" Ice cream " performed by Susan Cuthbert from Anne of Green Gables
" Good morning starshine " performed by Lynn Kellogg from Hair
" Money, money " performed by Joel Gray and Liza Minnelli from the soundtrack of Cabaret
" I got rhythm " performed by Ethel Merman from Girl Crazy
" Whatever Lola wants " performed by Gwen Verdon from Damn Yankees
