" 11 o'clock Songs/ My Mom's Birthday "

These two themes actually blended together quite nicely, as many of the songs my Mother likes turn out to actually be 11 o'clock songs.

What is an 11 o'clock song? I am not entirely certain, but here's what I do know: back in the day, musicals on Broadway would start at 8:30 pm and run till about 11:30 pm, so at around 11 o'clock, a typically constructed musical would have one last big number for their star to perform. 11 o'clock songs seem to generally be solos, performed by the show's star and which sort of wrap up everything that's happened so far in the show.

Also, I played " The Tower of Learning " from the soon-to-be-released (June 5!!) Rufus Wainwright album Poses. He wrote this songs for the upcoming (June 1!!) movie Moulin-Rouge, but the filmmakers endedup using another song of his.

The 11 o'clock songs I played:

" Till there was you " from The Music Man, performed by The Beatles from their album Meet the Beatles

" Mrs. Robinson " performed by Simon and Garfunkel from the soundtrack of The Graduate

" I'm going back " performed by Judy Holliday from Bells are Ringing

" Rose's turn " performed by Bette Midler from the 1993 soundtrack of Gypsy

" When I'm not near the girl I love " performed by David Wayne from Finian's Rainbow

" Oklahoma! " performed by Hugh Jackman, Josefina Gabrielle, Maureen Lipman, David Shelmerdine, Craig Purnell and the Ensemble from the 1998 London recording of Oklahoma!

" Sing for your supper " performed by Rebecca Luker, Debbie Gravitte and Sarah Uriarte Berry from the 1997 New York recording of The Boys from Syracuse

Also, I played:

" Runyonland music/ Fugue for tinhorns/ Follow the fold " performed by Stubby Kaye, Johnny Silver, Douglas Deane, Isabel Bigley and The Mission Group from Guys and Dolls

" Marian the librarian " performed by Robert Preston from The Music Man

" A little bit in love " from Wonderful Town, performed by Julie Andrews from her album T.V.'s Fair Julie

" His name was Coalhouse Walker/ Gettin' ready rag " performed by Brian Stokes Mitchell and the Ensemble from Ragtime
