Agenda:

CSuite Brochure Revision

David J. Murdoch handed out copies of the current CSuite Brochure, with the request that we review it and send comments to him at djm@chebucto.ns.ca by Friday, so that he could prepare a new print run.

Manual Update

More review input on the Chebucto User Guide is needed. A few comments were received from the first review group identified at the Internet Show. A note in the Message Of The Day (motd) has been suggested to encourage a broad spectrum review, with a general e-mail if necessary. Details will be finalized by e-mail among the help-doc group.

Start Page Design

The major activity for this week was a design session for the new Lynx "Start Page". Please correct mistakes or omissions in these notes.

Goals

Principles

Format

Process

Present ideas call for a script that runs at login, and generates a page which would be stored at some location (perhaps create /tmp/$USER with permission 700 at login, use it for all temporary files, remove directory on logout. This will mean modification to all executables that create temporaries :-( but this will resolve a security issue. ;-) and more consistently purge /tmp ;-)

The script will build the page depending on the configuration options specified by the user or from the default options. After inserting the mandatory parts, as many of the optional parts will be inserted as will fit on the screen as determined from $TERM and $LINES.

Issues to be resolved
Should the page be limited to a single standard screen (24 lines) or be allowed to run over.
How to incorporate updated information
Whether to rebuild page on user command
Details of selection strategies for queues
Provision of archives for queues, viewing messages
User configurable links

Privileged Access Control

Gerard presented a quick summary of the system he is preparing for enabling authorized group leaders to grant privileges to those who need access to various "special" areas and services in the system. Based on GAWK scripts and sudo, it promises to more effectively distribute control to those who need to have volunteers undertake specific responsibilities.
