Spencer House Activities

Greetings Cyber Seniors, and welcome to this month's edition of Cyber Seniors. Often I wonder just how many people read Cyber Seniors on a monthly basis, and as well I wonder who reads Cyber Seniors? Well, as I have learned this past month even journalists from Edmonton, Alberta read my column. I would like to extend a warm "hello" to all Albertans, and Mary please e-mail me your correct e-mail address. My response to you was returned from the postmaster.

Spencer House continues to bustle with activity, especially with older adults who drop in to use our Chebucto Community Net Public Access Terminal. If you are aged 55 plus, and interested in the internet you are welcome to drop in and surf the net, and sit in on one of our Intro to the Internet Workshops. We also offer Intro To Computer Workshops.

Spencer House, a registered charitable organization, is located at 5596 Morris Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3J 1C2. Phone (902) 421-6131. Our hours are Monday- Friday, 9:00am - 4:30pm, and Saturday 10:00am - 4:30pm. A hot, home cooked meal is served Monday-Friday at noon. The cost is only $ 3.50 for members and $ 4.00 for non-members. Reservations are not necessary.

We have had a tremendous response to our 1996 Annual Appeal. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have graciously sent Spencer House a donation. 1996 promises to be a year of economic change for Spencer House, and we truly appreciate your financial support in these tough economic times. Tax receipts will be issued for all donations over ten dollars.

Have you thought about becoming a member at Spencer House? If so please let us know. Membership is only $ 8.00 per year, and entitles you to reduced lunch prices, reduced admission at socials, and gets your name on our telephone list to advise you of upcoming events. Membership also allows you to vote at the annual meeting.

Computer Workshops

The next Introduction To The Chebucto Community Net is Wednesday, April 17 at 1:00 pm. Joe Baker, a volunteer with Chebucto Community Net will be your facilitator. These workshops are a great opportunity to drop in and ask Joe your questions about the internet. Perhaps you are a user who has new questions? Please feel free to join the workshop; just call 421-6131 and add your name to the list, or e-mail me at af088@ccn·cs·dal·ca.

Do you have alot of unanswered questions, or would you like to attend an intermediate workshop? Please let us know and we will do our best to arrange a workshop to meet your needs. It is possible that I will have a new volunteer for Wednesday mornings 10a.m. to noon. Stay tuned, or drop in on Wednesday to check this out.

Other Programs

The next Stop Smoking Program begins on Tuesday, April 16 at 6-7:30pm. This unique workshop/support group will run Tuesday and Thursday nights for four weeks. The program was designed in Ottawa for women, but we welcome men to join us anyway! The cost is no charge for Spencer House members, 55 plus $ 8.00, and all other ages $ 15.00. Please register in advance.

Grandfriends will be at Spencer House on Monday, April 15 at 1:00pm. This is an intergenerational program with a grade one class from St. Mary's Elementary School. All seniors are welcome to join us. This month the students will share their favourite toy with us, and we will take a look at the "Peeper" activity book.

April 21 marks Volunteer Week, and where would we be with out Spencer House volunteers? I can't even imagine Spencer House without our numerous, dedicated volunteers. You are what keeps Spencer House operational. The staff and seniors would like to thank all of you for your contribution, and hard work in the past years. We look forward to a continued working relationship in the upcoming year.

Well that is all for this month. Are you an older adult with ideas for columns ? Please feel free to e-mail your ideas, comments, and suggestions to af088.ccn·cs·dal·ca. Full credit will be given to older adults whose material is used in Cyber Seniors. Cheers!
