[Open Transport]  [MacTCP & ConfigPPP]  [PPP Client Applications]

There are two methods of getting connected to the CCN via PPP. The more contemporary, simpler and easier way is via the Open Transport system.

Open Transport

There are two components to this system - control panels called PPP and TCP/IP.

Recent Macintoshes, for instance those running System 7.5.3, 7.6.1, 8.0, 8.1 & 8.5 will have this software on the system installation CD that comes with the computer. They are located in a folder called Open Transport PPP 1.0. They may already be installed on your computer. Check in the Control Panels Folder in your System Folder and see if they are there. If not, run the installation utility and install them.

If you can't find these then download them here. The file is in the form of a Self-extracting Stuffit archive.

Once you have done this you need to configure both control panels.

  1. Open the PPP Control Panel. Type your user login in the Name field; type your PPP password in the Password field; and type the phone number 494-6744 in the Number field.

Select the Options button and look at the configurations there. Unless you have a reason to, leave them at their default settings.

  2. Either open the TCP/IP Control Panel, or select TCP/IP in the PPP menu of PPP (the effect is the same). Select PPP in the Connect via field; and Using PPP Server in the Configure field.

In the Name server addr.: field type:

    192.75.95.129
    192.75.95.88

In the Starting domain name: field type:

    chebucto.ns.ca

    Leave other fields empty.

That's it! Close the TCP/IP control panel; open the PPP control panel; select Connect and you should connect to the CCN PPP Portmaster! When you are finished select Disconnect.

MacTCP & ConfigPPP

If your computer or the version of your Operating System don't support Open Transport you can use the older MacTCP &ConfigPPP (also called FreePPP) system. Instructions and links to software are included here, however, the CCN does not actively support this system - so in case of problems - you're on your own!

If you can't find these then download them here. The file is in the form of a Self-extracting Stuffit archive. Install them in the Control Panels Folder in your System Folder.

  1. Configure MacTCP. Open this control panel. Select PPP. Click on the More button.

    1. Under Obtain Address select Server;
    2. Under Class select C;
    3. Under Domain Name Server Information type the following information in the Domain and IP Address fields:

      chebucto.ns.ca     192.75.95.129
      chebucto.ns.ca     192.75.75.88

      Select the first as default.

Click O.K. and then close the control panel. MacTCP is now configured.

  2. Configure ConfigPPP (also called FreePPP). Open this control panel. Select the appropriate Terminal Port. Idle Timeout should be 15 minutes; Echo Interval should be 20 seconds. Other settings as per your preferences.

  3. Click on New and type 'Chebucto'. Click O.K.

  4. Click on Config. This will bring up a new dialogue box.

    1. Server Name should be Chebucto; Port Speed should be set to your modem's speed; Flow Control can vary according to modem. The most likely settings are CTS ONLY, CTS & RTS (DTR) and NONE in that order. For more information consult your modem's user manual.
    2. Select Tone or Pulse dialing.
    3. In the Phone number field type: 494-6744.
    4. In the Modem Init field type your modem's initialization string (usually supplied in the modem's manual). If you don't know it, leave the field blank. If you are having problems connecting you can try AT&F1 or AT&F in that order.
    5. Modem Connect timeout should be 90 seconds.
    6. Leave the LCP Options, IPCP Options and Connect Script options at their default settings (unless you really know what you are doing - in which case you probably wouldn't bother to read this introduction!).
    7. Select the Authentication Button. You will get another dialogue box. Type your user login-id and PPP password in the appropriate fields. Retries should be set at 10 and Timeout should be 3.

  5. Close this dialogue box. And click Done in the next dialogue box. FreePPP is now configured!

To connect to the CCN, click on Open in the ConfigPPP Control Panel. When you are finished working on the CCN select Close to go off-line.

Now that you've made a PPP connection to the CCN your ready to use your PPP Client Applications to access the WWW, EMail, Usenet, FTP and Telnet functionality of the Internet!
