The following books deal exclusively with The 1893 Fair
held in Chicago, U.S.A. It was originally planned to
open in 1892 to commemorate the 400th year anniversary
of Columbus' voyage to what would become The Americas.
It was not able to be planned, built, and operating in
time, so it was delayed for a year.

PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE WORLD'S FAIR (1893)
" A Guide to the Worlds's Fair and Chicago"
Fair Guide Book. Over 300 books and publications were printed
for this fair many of which were labelled "Official Guides".
While not appearing to be the type of book one buys at the
entrance gate to get one's self around the fair, it none the
less gives detailed descriptions of the pavilions and events.
The host city of Chicago has its sites profiled as well.
*(Our copy is the hard-cover edition 15cm X 23cm standard book
size, 493 pages long! There are over 150 full-page photos of
Chicago and the fair, with each description and photo listed
in the table of contents, although many of the page numbers
are wrong. No index.
PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE WORLD'S FAIR (Continued)
This fair was originally to be held in 1892 to celebrate the
"discovery" of The Americas by Columbus but they could not
get it together in time, so it was delayed a year. The fair
grounds and some of the pavilions now partly make up The
University of Chicago. The CEC's copy of this book is an
original edition.)

REVISITING THE WHITE CITY (1993)
"American Art at the 1893 World's Fair"
By Carolyn Kinder Carr (Editor) and George Gurney. The
National Museum of American Art and the National Portrait
Gallery of the Smithsonian institution spent five years
researching the paintings and sculpture shown at the
exposition and have jointly produced this comprehensive,
commemorative volume. A colour plate section highlights 100
works of art featured at the exhibition. Historian Robert
Rydell discusses the historical and cultural context of the
fair, and Carolyn Kinder Carr adds to an understanding of the
regional and gender prejudices that pervaded the American art
arena at that time. An extensive catalogue section updates the
complete 1893 checklist, providing much new information on the
521 artists and locations of the objects, and offering
descriptions and illustrations of well over three-fourths of
the 1,184 works originally displayed.
