Neish was a former head of the Department of Chemistry at Queen's University and Past President of the Chemical Institute of Canada. He succeeded E. Gordon Young as Director of the Atlantic Regional Laboratory in Halifax in 1962. He was an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Neish was awarded honorary degrees by Mount Allison and McGill Universities.
  He was President of the Canadian Society of Plant Physiologists in 1968-69, and in 1970 was the first recipient of the Society's Gold Medal.
  He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, 18 March 1971.
