One preventivemeasure would be to block access to the composter by 
placing mesh screen into/over the vents and other suitable openings.  A 
good time to do this would be now or at least very soon before queens to be 
get out of hibernation. Soon, weather permitting, they will be on their way to 
find suitable locations to establish a new colony (the ones from the previous 
year are gone, only the queens hibernate and start from scratch -unlike 
honey bee and ant colonies).
