I remember when I was young a family had a problem with a wasp nest =
behind the wooden shingles in their roof. They laid a brick on the roof =
and laid a bottle full of kerosene on it so that the top of the bottle =
was just below the entrance to the nest. A few days later the bottle was =
full of dead wasps.

Subject: Re: [NatureNS] hornets in composter
Hi Nelson,
The hornets would be one of the species of yellow jacket (Vespula =
spp.). They are attracted to decomposing matter of all sorts so a =
composter could be a real magnet. This past summer I was along the =
waterfront in Pictou where all the garbage bins (which contained various =
food items discarded by tourists) were attracting large numbers of =
yellow jackets. I gather these were proving to be a real nuisance since =
wasp traps had been placed adjacent to many of these bins. If they are a =
problem for your friend I would recommend one of these. I think you can =
get these from many gardening or hardware stores. There are some, such =
as:
http://www.nothingbuthardware.com/737807.html
Which allow you to convert any soda bottle into a wasp trap and cost =
relatively little.
Best wishes,
Chris

I am not sure what specie of hornet is involved.
Has anyone had experience with this that can offer suggestions?
