Many thanks to Clarence Stevens for his Naturens invitation yesterday to see what life was moving about at Julie's Pond in Hemlock Ravine, Halifax, on an early-spring evening. Backswimmers, Waterboatman, and a few male Yellow-Spotted Salamanders were in the pond. Thanks to Clarence's net, we got to see two of these species close-up. Here are five photos of the Salamanders -- as you can see from the 5th photo, my daughter was delighted to be holding one for the first time. The arrangement of spots on each salamander is, like a snowflake design, unique. (A Wood Frog and a Barred Owl were also heard, but I had to leave before either was seen.) As many of you may know, over the past decade or so the irresponsible release of pet goldfish has seriously affected the population of native species in the pond.
