Hello all
To answer the whale watching question, we are hoping to start up at =
Brier Island Whale and Seabird Cruises on May 15th. True, it is =
considered early for whale watching although fishermen have been =
sighting minke whales. However, May is very good for bird watching. =
Usually at that time, we are seeing the phalaropes as they migrate to =
the Arctic for nesting. Large numbers of Northern Fulmars are usually =
seen, as well as some alcids such as puffins, and if lucky, common =
murres and razorbills.

Angela, I forgot to answer your inquiry about whale-watching in May? =
-- much too early, I think, although you could always inquire via the =
toll-free numbers in the current Doers and Dreamers guide for N.S. =
tourism. I would imagine that those whale-watching boats might be =
available for seabird watching during May, for a price, of course.
Concerning the hikes that Bob McDonald mentioned, you might wish to =
avoid "shared trails", since that expression often refers to trails that =
can be used by ATVs and snowmobiles. You should be able to get info' =
from Michael Haynes's various books, e.g. hiking trails of Nova Scotia =
etc., and perhaps also from the N.S. Trails Federation??
Cheers from Jim in Wolfville=20

Subject: [NatureNS] smelt runs
Reply-To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca
My friend has family coming to visit through April and May. They are =
from "Out West". I'm fishing around on this forum for info. regarding =
cool things to see and do ( nature-ly inclined )
She was wondering about smelt runs. Are there any around here? ( =
within a few hours of Windsor ) Any "pancake breakfasts" like the Eagle =
Watch weekend but around smelt?
What might be some of your recommendations for other cool things to =
see or to do in NS during that time? Is it possible to do any whale =
watching? Water fall hikes? Nature hikes?
Thanks
Angela in Windsor
