At the bottom of Sherm's note below, he mentions shorebirds roosting
inland (sort of resting, but these birds have migratory restlessness,
too, so frequently fly too, until they can feed again). When tides
are unusually high, there is no beach on which to roost (although the
imported boulders are available). Thus the shorebirds seek out
ploughed fields or other situations with good views, or even are
known to go in under crops and out of the prying eyes of enemies like
merlins and peregrines, until their tidal clocks tell them it is time
to head back to the Minas Basin or Chignecto Bay shores where the
tide is ebbing to allow access to the mud and mud shrimps etc. again.

Also, flocks are constantly arriving from the north and other flocks
departing toward the south, so that the numbers we see from day to
day can fluctuate widely.

Check out the Blomidon Nat. Soc. Calendar and peruse the tide heights
for August to see the range from nearly 16 m. to about 10 m. during
the month.

Next month, I think on Sept. 11, I will be leading a BNS field trip
on an extremely low, low tide -- check out blomidonnaturalists.ca for
the event listings for the club, and you don't have to be a member to
participate -- I will be showing worms and mud shrimps and shells and
crabs and whatever we can find on the Kingsport mudflat.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
