I took a run down to Hartlen Point today between classes. No sign of the
skimmers at MacCormack's Beach, just the regular assortment of gulls. There was
a flock of semipalmated plovers and about five black guillemots around, though.
And I spotted a fox on Lawlor's Island creeping up on the gulls roosting there,
but he was unsuccessful in his attempts to get a meal.

Down at Hartlen Point, there were a number of black-bellied plovers and Liz
Doull kindly directed me towards two golden-plovers nearby. I also spotted a
lone semipalmated sandpiper in the grass. An osprey made a fairly close flyby. A
much smaller raptor, either a sharp-shin or a merlin - I didn't get a good look
- blasted across the road as I was leaving, chasing a flock of
starlings. Nonavian, but in the air was a monarch butterfly looking rather lost!

I got a much better look at a merlin flying across the road near the 111.
