Mixed nature notes, Sept. 23 to Oct. 5: w. conifer seed bug, Eur.
crane fly, wood ducks, dead skunks, mushrooms & fly larvae,
shorebirds, cormorants, Can. geese, feeder birds.

SEPT. 23, 2010 - At high tide at 1:45 p.m. there were 18 double-
crested cormorants perched on the power line across the Gaspereau
River just north of hwy. 101 (Hortonville).

I found a western conifer seed bug (Leptoglossus occidentalis) on a
window outside our house. For photo see Stephen Marshall's huge
informative tome on insects and their natural history. And this bug
was featured on Quirks and Quarks a couple of years ago? regarding
its infrared sensors on its underside to detect by "seeing" the
slightly warmer cones on conifer trees.

SEPT. 26, 2010 - A single European crane fly, Tipula paludosa?, was
on our front door -- I have been seeing individuals of this lawn-
related species for over a month, I think.

Brenda & Bill Thexton counted 18 double-crested cormorants still,
again, perched on the power line across the Gaspereau River at
Hortonville, sometime recently at high tide.

At our feeders in Wolfville, I saw 4 n. cardinals together at once --
adult male, adult female, 2 drab juveniles -- and, separately, one of
our two "orange-red" males. Lately up to 5+ blue jays, up to 9
mourning doves, and 3 crows often dominate the feeders, plus 3
pheasants, 4+ chickadees, 5+ brown purple finches, and a few
starlings on the bird-pies.

Over the last several days, Wolfville lawns have sported large white
Agaricus sp. mushrooms. Also seen were a couple of fresh Dryad's
saddle polypores on stumps and a small group of small brown-capped
inky-cap Coprinus mushrooms.

SEPT. 29, 2010 - At high tide (5 p.m.) in Wolfville Harbour, about 27
greater yellowlegs were roosting in the rocks along the railroad east
of the bandstand. No lessers and no other shorebirds were seen.

At our feeders I saw an orange male n. cardinal, one of the two that
were present as of a few days ago. The orange colour is very obvious
in overcast lighting, but less so on sunny days.

OCTOBER 1, 2010 - A large adult skunk was road-killed on Belcher St.,
west of Port Williams and north of New Minas. This is the first dead
skunk I have seen or smelled since early Spring.

OCT. 2, 2010 - At Canard Pond, nothing notable among the many black
ducks, green-winged teals, and smaller numbers of mallards. Nothing
at all on Saxon St. Pond. In "Gesner's Pond" (s. of Church St. on
Middle Dyke Rd.), 3 m,f pairs of wood ducks. "Stella's Pond" next to
Cornwallis River held a great blue heron.

And an intact cap of a rotting whitish mushroom (probably an
Amanita?) was infested with several skinny white fly maggots/larvae
about 5 mm. long in the gills and cap tissue. See current discussion
of such online on NatureNS.

OCT. 5, 2010 - Brenda & Bill Thexton at Lakeville saw a very large
flock of Canada geese, in 2 big groups, totalling at least several
hundreds ("maybe a thousand?", said Brenda, without counting them).
But today at 4 p.m. there was not a single bird on Silver Lake.

And on my drive today I saw 2 more new road-killed skunks: one on
hwy. 341 n. of Kentville, and the other a bit north of Port Williams
on hwy. 358. (One more was seen on Oct. 1 on Belcher St. west of
Port Williams.)(These are the first I have noticed since Spring.)

Regarding our back-yard feeders in Wolfville, cardinals sighted
lately include two males, an adult female, and a juvenile female.
But blue jays (up to 6) and to some extent mourning doves continue to
dominate the feeders during most of the day. Also present are 4+ bl.-
c. chickadees, a red-breasted nuthatch, a few brown purple finches,
song and white-throated sparrows, occasional goldfinches, 1-2
starlings, 1 cock pheasant, no woodpeckers lately, and no mammals.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
