On Friday last (Nov. 19th) on a stroll around Point Pleasant Park, I
looked for blossoms on witch hazel which in the past have been still
quite numerous at this time of year. I saw only one on about 50 large
shrubs/small trees examined. There were lots of finished blossoms. The
next day I went to a talk by Laurie Lacie and the first slide he
showed was of witch hazel so I asked him about flowers in his area
(Bridgewater) at this time of year. He said there were
exceptionally few compared to past years. So apparently, the factors
that favoured so much early flowering this year by spring and sumer
flowering species this year (or other factors) also favoured early
completion of flowering by witch hazel I'm not sure about initiation
of fall blooms, I usually see them from mid- September to early Dec.
in PPP, but I didn't look specifically for early blooms this year.
