I both drove and walked in the areas formerly frequented by the tanager. The river ducks were mostly upstream in the river west of the Legion, and I saw at least one hooded merganser among them -- today is the first day of the Wolfville Count Week, since our Count Day is Saturday, Dec. 18. Someone should try to document the Eurasian wigeon and American wigeons on the river before Count Day. There were a couple of flocks of starlings, about 8 mourning doves, and about 35 Am. goldfinches feeding on birch seeds along the river -- the goldfinches also were tending an active feeder a bit west of the Fireside Cafe. Also there was an immature red-tailed hawk along the riverbank, plus flying bald eagle, ravens & crows, herring and great black-backed gulls. While sitting in the Fireside Cafe, I was briefly excited when I saw a bird land in the bushes next to the cafe, but it was only one of two house sparrows.
