Thanks to Paul for posting that useful account of Horned Larks by Ron  
Pittiway. Essentially, what to look for are differences in facial  
colour - quite strongly yellowish in our usual fa-through-spring  
subspecies alpestris, white in hoyti, and with at most a lemon yellow  
wash on the throat of subspecies praticola - which once nested in NS  
and may still do so in the Valley,
