Hi all
The Pictou Hbr. CBC was run Jan. 1 with average results for species ~ 69, but numbers of many of the usual common species were down significantly.
An. imm. BROAD-WINGED HAWK was discovered and photographed by 2 groups independently in the Three Brooks area
( Ally and Hughie Manthrone as well as Charlie Kendell and Bernice Moores)- a really good find this time of year. New species for the
count were 2 DOVEKIE seen from the Melmerby Beach area by Rob Reid and Rick Ferguson.
There were large numbers of Red-breasted Mergansers (near 4000), Long-tailed Ducks >300, and Bonaparte's Gulls >800, but very low
numbers for Black Ducks, Common Goldeneye, Common Merganser and Canada Geese which have yet to become concentrated in the
count circle because of open water from the mild winter thus far. There were good numbers of Goldfinches, Redpolls but no Ev. grosbeak,
Pine Siskins, Pine Grosbeaks or Crossbills.
I am still woking on the results so more details will be published later.
cheers
ken
