Hi Gayle and all, I think any large disaster to any living species is a
good topic for naturens discussion as long as we attempt to get reliable
factual information.
I will let you know when I hear any results of why this happened.
(Nature Canada is a partner with Bird Life International, so I am
sending this to Mara Kerry and Ted Cheskey in Ottawa.)
Here is a note from CBS news and CNN:
" Robby King, a wildlife officer for the state Game and Fish Commission,
collected about 65 dead birds on Saturday. They will be sent for testing
to the state Livestock and Poultry Commission lab and the National
Wildlife Health Center lab in Madison, Wis."
CNN "(Karen) Rowe (an ornithologist) said Sunday there was evidence that
large fireworks may have played a role. "
Note that the birds started falling in a specific area shortly after
11pm on New Year's Eve.

Cheers, Joan
PS And in some places balloons filled with wishes are released into the
air on New Year's Eve. I wonder how many creatures we kill with our good
wishes?
