Subject: [NS-RBA] Flack and Red-winged Blackbirds
Sometimes things that appear complicated are really very simple. In this case the simplicity may apply to the die-off of the Red-winged Blackbirds during a fireworks display. Flack during war is the use of high altitude artillery that explodes at a predetermined altitude, the altitude of the target aircraft, and scatters shrapnel and shock waves in a spherical direction. This is used to destroy aircraft in flight, not necessarily by a direct hit, but by these indirect effects of shrapnel and shock.
Shooting fireworks high or low into the sky will cause local shock waves much like flack would. This would not only effect birds in flight directly by the shock wave itself but also indirectly by damaging their ear drums which would effect their balance, or simply their ability to maintain direction and speed. So without their avionics during night flight, as it were, they would enter the dreaded death spiral and crash into buildings and the ground.
Postmortem analysis will likely tell the story but I believe the folks that shot the fireworks killed the birds, a fluke accident of circumstance, where the birds were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
My assumption of course is that birds require functioning ear drums for stability much like humans.
This is just a theory!
