I am forwarding a response from Bev Wigney (below) to my inquiry about what=
bird of prey might have killed a crow on the garage roof recently. She=2C=
like others=2C has had trouble getting posts to go through successfully to=
NatureNS. Thank you to all who responded!

Hi Rosemary=2C
For some reason=2C my posts to NatureNS never work anymore or I would just =
reply to you there. Here's an answer to your "owls and crows" question. P=
lease feel free to post this to the naturelist if you wish:
According to this page from the birds.cornell.edu "Crow FAQ"- one reason th=
at crows roost in urban areas: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/crows/crowfaq.h=
tm
b) Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) populations should be lower in urban=
areas. Next to people with guns=2C Great Horned Owls pose the largest dang=
er to an adult crow. Great Horned Owls take adults as well as nestling crow=
s with great regularity. (That is why crows hate them so much!) Owls probab=
ly are regular attendants at crow roosts=2C as owls wake up as the crows ar=
e heading into the roosts=2C and sleeping crows should be pretty easy picki=
ng.

Are there hawks here that will also capture and eat crows?
